Who should come in for COVID testing?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidance on when you should consider getting tested for COVID-19. Some of the circumstances that should prompt COVID testing include:

• Exposure to someone with a confirmed COVID infection
• Expectations of having close contact with someone who may experience severe symptoms from COVID
• If you begin experiencing COVID symptoms
• If you are in a high-risk setting and are asked to participate in screen testing

If you’ve been exposed to someone with a COVID infection, self-isolate and wait five days to get tested. Coming in earlier puts you at a high risk of false negative test results. 

You might also need COVID testing as a requirement for travel. Many camps, school events, and other activities with large gatherings of people may also require a negative test result. 

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Knowing what to look for can make it easier to decide when to seek testing for COVID-19. Some of the symptoms associated with this disease include:

• Cough
• Fever
• Fatigue
• Loss of taste or smell
• Muscle aches
• Headaches
• Nausea or vomiting
• Sore throat

If you develop any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to limit your contact with others until you’ve had COVID testing to determine your status.

What happens if COVID testing reveals a positive result?

If your symptoms are mild-to-moderate, you can mostly find relief through self-care efforts at home. Allow for a few days of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms like sore throat and headache. Take care to avoid contact with others as your body fights off the virus.
