What is Botox?

Botox is a type of injectable treatment that is FDA-approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It’s the most popular nonsurgical treatment for these areas across the world and was the first injectable to receive approval for aesthetic applications.

Botox is created from a toxin called onabotulinumtoxinA, a substance found naturally in forests and lakes. While this substance is incredibly toxic in certain concentrations, the volume used in Botox is carefully controlled and perfectly safe.

How does Botox work?

Botox temporarily prevents treated muscle tissue from going through the full range of motion. When injected into the muscles in your forehead, between your brows, or at the outside corners of your eyes, Botox temporarily weakens those muscles so they won’t be able to tug and pull your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles.

The treated muscles retain some function, so you continue to make normal facial expressions and won’t have a “frozen” look. One of the things that people love about Botox is the ability to smooth lines and wrinkles without creating an abnormal, overly “done” appearance.

It takes several quick injections to administer Botox, and you can have more than one area treated during the same visit. Botox is also used “off-label” to address other signs of aging.

How long do Botox results last?

It only takes around 15 minutes to complete your Botox treatment, and there’s no need for any advance preparation or anesthesia. Your results develop within 24-48 hours and then last around four months.

At that point, your lines and wrinkles slowly begin to return. You can then decide whether or not to extend your results with another round of injections.
